De Bruyne walked onto the pitch wearing an armband to a roaring reception from the fans and a large banner in the main stand thanking the 33-year-old.

Despite not having a goal or an assist, his substitution in the 69th minute to a standing ovation from the whole stadium was impressive, as was the atmosphere after the final whistle as he brought his family to say goodbye to the fans.

“I have to say it was a dark and stormy night, it was amazing,” De Bruyne told the official website.

“I think the stadium is full. Everyone is here to say goodbye.”

“So I think that shows how much the fans appreciate me. I don’t know how to explain how touched I am, but it’s great.”

“The boys were very compose. I is very surprise because I don’t know what they thought of what they heard. But with the full capacity fans around, the crowd, the bright lights, they handled it very well.”

“It’s really not easy for kids to make videos like that. I’m really proud of them because it was challenging for them to be that young, but they made it through.”

“As I said, the kids are coping brilliantly and I am a proud father to them.”

As for the Champions League quota, City still has their own fate, just needing to cruise to defeat Fulham (May 25), which De Bruyne urged not to make the same mistake as the last time they went empty-handed in London, where they lost 0-1 to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.

“We know what we need to do now. We want to qualify for next season’s Champions League, which is where the team belongs,” the Belgian added.

“But Fulham won’t let us go easily. From now on, we’ll rest for 2-3 days to take care of our bodies and prepare ourselves before we perform in the next match on Sunday.”

“I hope to get a good result at the end of the competition.”
